Remembering Rajesh Khanna on his birthday, December, 29

Rajesh Khanna, the first superstar of Indian Cinema was born as Jatin Khanna on 29th December, 1942 in Amritsar, Punjab, in 1942. His performances still echo in the hearts of audiences. His career spanned four decades in which he acted in about 150 movies.

In the childhood, Rajesh Khanna was adopted by Chunnilal Khanna and Leelawati who lived in Mumbai. From young age, he used to participate in plays in school and college.

Career at Bollywood

In 1960’s a contest was organized by United Producers and Film fare, in which Rajesh Khanna participated and was successful in beating other candidates. This particular moment paved his way for Bollywood. 1966 Film “Aakri Khat” was the first movie of Rajesh Khanna. However, 1969 hit film Aradhna where his pairing with Sharmila Tagore is still cherished, made him superstar. From 1969 to 1972, he recorded 15 continuous solo hit films these included “Amar Prem”, “Anand”, “Kati Patang” and “Do Raaste”. His onscreen roles with various actresses such as Mumtaz, Sharmila Tagore and Asha Parkeh were liked much by the viewers of that time.

Personal Life

Rajesh Khanna’s personal life was no less dramatic than the films he acted in. He married Dimple Kapadia who was 16 years old then in 1973. Just after marriage debut film of Dimple Kapadia, “Bobby” was released. They had two daughters, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna. Lives of Rajesh and Dimple were glamorous but it soon faced challenges and they got separated. Though, there was no official divorce ever.

He was said to have affairs with actress Anju Mahendru before his marriage. Their breakup made headlines at that time. There were rumors of his relationship with Anita Advani, his fan in his later years.

Controversies

Despite being a superstar of that ear, Rajesh Khanna was known for his mood swings and unpredictable nature. He had several clashes with directors and his co-stars. After 1970s when his acting career declined he faced strained relationship in the film industry. Anita Advani with whom he was claimed to be his live-in partner also filed a case of domestic violence against him.

Political Stint

Rajesh Khanna entered into politics as well. On the ticket of Indian National Congress, he was elected as Member of Parliament from the New Delhi constituency in the year 1992.

Awards

Rajesh Khanna was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2013 posthumously. He was awarded 5 filmfare awards and a special award for his contribution to Indian Cinema.

The first superstar of Indian Cinema passed away on 18th July, 2012 after acting in more than 160 films.
