M.T. Vasudevan Nair, the shining star of Indian literature and films, passed away

Today on 26.12.2024, Madath Thekkepaattu Vasudevan Nair passed away, he was about 91 years old. Famous writer, director and script writer Nair was born on 15 July 1933 in Kudallur village of Ponnani district of Kerala

Vasudevan Nair’s childhood was like that of ordinary children, but from the time of early education, he became attracted towards literature. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in science, he started his writing career. His first important story was “Valarthumrigangal” which gave him entry into the literary world. This story was so well liked that he received the first prize in the World Short Story Competition organized by the New York Herald Tribune.

His “Naalukettu”, published in 1958, also proved to be a milestone and it earned him the Kerala Sahitya Academy Award. “Manju”, “Kaalam”, “Asuravithu” and “Randamuzham” are his other important works. His works were always related to the common people and used to act as a mirror of the society and depicted social issues in a big way.

Vasudevan Nair was a successful writer as well as a film script writer and director. He wrote the screenplay of many films, which were very hit at the box office. “Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha”, “Amrutham Gamaya”, “Panchagni” and “Parinayam” are some of his important films. Due to his literary skills and understanding of society, he was able to show reality in films in an interesting way, this was the main reason for his film success.

He was also honored with many awards for his service to literature and film world, the major ones among which are, Indian Sahitya Academy Award, Kerala Sahitya Academy Award and National Film Award.
