Osamu Suzuki was born as Osamu Matsuda on January 30, 1930, in Gero, Japan. He was a towering figure in the automobile industry. He has recently passed away on December 25, 2024, at the age of 94. He started his journey with Suzuki Motor Corporation in the year 1958 post his marriage with a member of founding family. After marriage, he adopted Suzuki surname.

In his early life, he was like any other ordinary citizen of Japan. He began studying law. To support his studies, he started working as a junior high school teacher and also as a night guard. After graduation and before joining Suzuki, he worked as a loan officer at a local bank. As soon as he occupied a position in the company, transformations in its operations began. He did not know at that time that his small efforts would make Suzuki Motors as a household name in the field of small cars and motorcycles.

In the company, he held various positions, including that of president, chairman, and CEO. His character was marked with decisive leadership style and commitment. It was during his stint that Suzuki Motor Corporation formed strategic alliances with General Motors and Volkswagen which helped expand its footprint across North America and Europe. His strongest and most successful decision was to enter the Indian market in the 1980s.

Maruti Udyog was created in 1982 when Suzuki forged a joint venture with the Government of India. Maruti-800 car was a result of this partnership. This small car was an instant hit and dominated Indian auto market for many years. Till today, Maruti Suzuki is the largest carmaker in India.

The Maruti-Suzuki venture helped in job creation and economic growth in India by expanding its product range and manufacturing capabilities. On the other hand, the company’s success in India led towards strengthening its financial position.

Despite his success, Suzuki faced some challenges also. Main controversy was a fuel-economy testing scandal in Japan. This scandal led to his resignation as CEO in 2016. In his later years, Suzuki played role of advisor for the company.

Golf was a passion for Osamu Suzuki and he remained active even in his later years. He has been survived by his wife and three children. He has left a legacy of innovation and market leadership in the automotive industry.
